The Electronic Control Module (ECM) can log events. Events refer to engine operating conditions such as low oil pressure or high coolant temperature. Logged events usually indicate a mechanical problem instead of an electronic system problem.

Parameters for Programmable Monitoring System

The following features are able to be selected in the monitoring system for industrial engines.

  • Warning

  • Derate

  • Shutdown

The Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) can be used in order to select the monitoring features. These features can be turned ON or OFF. When an event is active, the ECM will generate an event code.

The ECM will generate an EID diagnostic code on the Cat data link. The diagnostic code will be displayed on a diagnostic screen of Cat ET.

The ECM will generate a SPN-FMI diagnostic code on the J1939 data link. The diagnostic code may be displayed on a receiving device for the J1939 data link.

The ECM will generate a flash code that will be displayed on the diagnostic lamp.

The warning lamp will display the following conditions.

  • Remain ON for a “Warning”.

  • Flash for a “Derate”.

When a selected level is turned OFF, the ECM will log the event code but the ECM will not take any action on the event. For example, the ECM will not give a warning, a derate, or a shutdown.

If multiple derates are active, the derate that limits the most power will be the derate that is shown.
