Installation Of Crankshaft Seals And Wear Sleeves 3400 Series Engines

A Tools needed: 1-5P1733 Locator, 2-5P7301 Locator, 3-6V2087 Installer, 4-6V2086 Installer, 5-9S8858 Nut, 6-5P1737 Bolts (three), 7-5P7309 Bolts (two), 8-5P7310 Bolts (two). One 5P7303 Spacer (not shown).

B Front Wear Sleeve and Seal – All Engines

1 Fasten 5P1733 Locator (10) to the crankshaft with three 5P1737 Bolts (9). Put clean engine oil on the seal lip of seal (11) and on the outside diameter of wear sleeve (12). Install seal (11) on wear sleeve (12) as shown. Use 8M8060 Quick Cure Primer to clean the outside diameter (A) of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter (B) of the wear sleeve. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on the outside diameter (A) of the crankshaft flange and the inside diameter (B) of the wear sleeve.

2 Put wear sleeve (12) with seal (11) on locator (10), as shown.

3 Put 6V2086 Installer (4) and 9S8858 Nut (7) on locator (10) as shown. Put lubricant at location (C) [between face of washer on nut (7) and its contact area on installer (4)].

4 Tighten nut (7) until installer (4) is against locator (10). NOTE: On some early engines, if the seal goes against the bottom of the bore, a resistance (increase in torque) will be felt on nut (7). Do not tighten nut (7) too tight or the case (body) of the seal will be damaged.

C Rear Wear Sleeve and Seal – All Standard Engines

1 Fasten 5P1733 Locator (10) to the crankshaft with three 5P1737 Bolts (9). Put clean engine oil on the seal lip of seal (11), and on the outside diameter of wear sleeve (12). Install seal (11) on wear sleeve (12) as shown. Use 8M8060 Quick Cure Primer to clean outside diameter (A) of the crankshaft flange, and inside diameter (B) of the wear sleeve. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on outside diameter (A) of the crankshaft flange, and inside diameter (B) of the wear sleeve.

2 Put wear sleeve (12) with seal (11) on locator (10) as shown. Install 5P7303 Spacer (6) on the stud of locator (10).

3 Put 6V2087 Installer (5) and 9S8858 Nut (7) on locator (10) as shown. Put lubricant at location (C) [between face of washer on nut (7) and its contact point on installer (5)].

4 Tighten nut (7) until the inside surface of installer (5) comes in contact with spacer (6).

NOTE: On some early engines, if the seal goes against the bottom of the bore, a resistance (increase in torque) will be felt on nut (7). Do not tighten nut (7) too tight or the case (body) of the seal will be damaged.

1 Fasten 5P7301 Locator (2) to the rear of the crankshaft with two 5P7309 Bolts or two 5P7310 Bolts. Put clean engine oil on the seal lip of seal (13) and the outside diameter of wear sleeve (14) as shown. Use 8M8060 Quick Cure Primer to clean outside diameter (A) of gear (15) and inside diameter (B) of the wear sleeve. Put 9S3265 Retaining Compound on outside diameter (A) of the gear and inside diameter (B) of the wear sleeve.

2 Put wear sleeve (14) with seal (13) on locator (2). Put 6V2087 Installer (5) and 9S8858 Nut (7) on locator (2) as shown. Put lubricant at location (C) [between face of washer on nut (7) and its contact area on installer (5)]. Tighten nut (7) until installer (5) is against locator (2).
