Conditions Which Generate This Code:
The engine has been running for three minutes and the coolant temperature has exceeded the derate trip point for coolant temperature protection.
System Response:
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) will log the event.
Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) displays “Engine Derate” on the status screen.
The ECM will derate engine power by 12.5 percent. The ECM will derate engine power by a maximum of 25 percent for coolant temperatures that exceed 109 °C (228 °F). The engine power will be derated at a rate of one percent per second.
Test Step 1. Check the Monitoring System Parameter
The “High Engine Coolant Temperature” parameter may be incorrectly programmed. Use Cat ET to view the parameter setting for “High Engine Coolant Temperature”. Ensure that the parameter setting is correct for the application of the engine.
Expected Result:
The “High Engine Coolant Temperature” parameter is programmed correctly.
Results:
- OK – An overheating condition exists for the engine.
Repair: Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, “Cooling System – Check”.
STOP
- Not OK – The parameter is incorrectly programmed.
Repair: Refer to Troubleshooting, “System Configuration Parameters” for the temperature range that is available for the “High Engine Coolant Temperature” parameter.Verify that the repair eliminates the problem.
