C13, C15, and C18 Engines Troubleshooting – Fuel System Water Separator Has Water

System Operation Description:

This procedure covers the following diagnostic codes:

Note: The following codes may not be applicable for certain applications.

CDL Code Description Comments
E232(1) Fuel System Water Separator Has Water Water has been detected in the fuel that is contained in the fuel/water separator bowl. The water has been present for at least 40 seconds.
The code is logged.
E232(2) Fuel System Water Separator Has Water Water has been detected in the fuel that is contained in the fuel/water separator bowl. The water has been present for at least 40 seconds.
The code is logged.

Note: You may not be able see the presence of water in the bowl. Water may turn dark yellow in color when introduced into the fuel system. This discoloration would prevent the ability to differentiate the water from the fuel.

Test Step 1. Drain the Fuel Trap

 

  1. Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

 

  1. Drain the fuel/water separator bowl. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Fuel System Primary Filter/Water Separator – Drain”.

Results:

Continue to the next test step.

Test Step 2. Prime the Fuel System

 

  1. Prime the fuel system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, “Fuel System – Prime”.

 

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

Results:

Continue to the next test step.

Test Step 3. Check for an Active Event Code

 

  1. Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Do not start the engine.

 

  1. Wait for one minute. The event code should disappear. If the code is still present, replace the switch. If the problem is not resolved, repair the harness or replace the harness.

Results:

 

  • OK –Repair: If the event code deactivates within one minute after the bowl is drained, start the engine and allow the engine to run for five minutes.

    STOP

     

  • Not OK –Repair: If the event code reappears, the fuel supply is contaminated with water. Drain the fuel tank and then fill the fuel tank with clean fuel.

    Repeat Steps 1 through 3 in order to clear the fuel supply of contamination.
