All 3306 and 3400 Commercial Engines
Caterpillar recommends that the cylinder packs be removed when a failed cylinder head gasket compression seal is accompanied by the presence of combustion gas present in the cooling system. The cylinder packs must be removed to thoroughly inspect under the cylinder liner flanges and the cylinder block. Inspection is recommended because erosion/corrosion can develop between the bottom of the cylinder liner flange and the cylinder block. This can affect the sealing capability of the cylinder head to the cylinder block joint. For complete repair instructions, refer to SEHS9564 for 3400 Series Commercial Engines and SEHS9565 for 3306 Commercial Engines.
Cylinder head or spacer plate gasket repairs caused from external oil or water leaks do not require removal of the cylinder packs.
