Procedure for Troubleshooting and Cleaning the Oil Rail System for the Hydraulic Electronic Unit Injector

Procedure for the Inspection of Debris in the Pump for the HEUI

Do not remove the plugs for the oil rail of the HEUI unless you are instructed in the following procedure.

  1. Record any logged diagnostic or event codes prior to starting this procedure.

  1. Connect the digital multimeter to the pump for the HEUI in order to check resistance of the connector on the pump.

  1. Observe resistance values on the digital multimeter.Note: The engine must be cold. A hot engine will show incorrect readings.Press on the connector and wiggle the connector as you observe the resistance on the digital multimeter.
    • If resistance is in the range of 8 ± 2 Ohms, and the resistance remains stable, go to Step 4.
    • If resistance is outside the 8 ± 2 Ohms range or the resistance fluctuates erratically, replace the pump for the HEUI.

(3) High pressure hard line

Draining the oil from the pump for the HEUI

  1. Clean the exterior area of the pump for the HEUI. Clean the cover, between the cover and the housing, and around the inlet oil line and the fitting to remove any dirt, debris, and oil. Remove inlet oil line and adapter fitting from the pump cover. DO NOT remove the high pressure hard line. Refer to Illustration 4 for a reference. Use 1U-5718 Vacuum Pump in order to drain the oil out of the pump for the HEUI. Insert the tube on the vacuum pump into the opening in the pump for the HEUI. Refer to Illustration 5 for the correct location. Ensure that the tube is inserted as far as possible into the pump. Once five bottles of oil are removed from the pump, the pump is drained.Note: DO NOT proceed to Step 5 without draining the oil from the pump for the HEUI.

  1. Back out the cover bolts from the threads in the pump housing. The joint that is between the cover and the housing must be free of any dirt, debris, or oil.Back out the cover bolts from the threads in the pump housing. Do not remove the bolts from the pump cover.Note: Ensure that no debris falls into the pump when the cover is loosened.Note: Pulling the bolts out of the cover can result in losing the bolts. Also, the pump cover may fall.

  1. Lift the cover enough to clear the bolts. Then, turn the pump cover clockwise by 90 degrees and place the cover on top of the pump housing. Refer to Illustration 7.

(4) Coil

Coil without debris

(5) Debris on the coil

  1. Inspect the coil for debris. The debris will be visible in the form of metal shavings on the coil. Refer to Illustration 10. If the coil is covered in soot, use a clean magnet to locate the debris.Note: DO NOT use high-pressure fluid or other cleaning solvents. Debris may be lost during cleaning.
    • If metallic debris is found, capture a digital image that clearly shows the debris. Upload this image to SIMSi with the repair report. Re-install the cover onto the pump. Replace the pump then proceed to Step 8.
    • If debris is not found, proceed to Step 8.

Installing the pump cover

  1. Install the pump cover onto the pump housing. Tighten the four middle bolts. Then, tighten the end bolts in a crisscross pattern. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 10.2 N·m (90 lb in).Note: Make sure that the gasket is in place between the housing and the cover.

  1. Repeat Step 1 and Step 2 in order to confirm the electrical connection for the pump coil was not damaged during the removal of the pump cover.

  1. Install the oil inlet line adapter, inlet line, and harness connector to the pump.Note: After the HEUI pump is replaced or reassembled, the engine must be cranked for an extended length of time to fill the pump with oil.Note: Clear any diagnostic or event codes that activated during the initial start-up.

  1. Complete the checklist form provided with the service replacement part and insert into the box containing the part that is being returned. Proceed to the section of this instruction titled Oil Rail Cleaning Procedure for the correct engine size that is being worked on.
