C7 Industrial Engines Disassembly and Assembly – Air Compressor – Remove and Install

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the air pressure from the air tank and drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual.

  1. Disconnect hose assemblies (1) and (3) from air compressor (8) .

  1. Disconnect hose (2) and hose assembly (7) from air compressor (8) . Remove the clip and the bolt for hose assembly (7) .

  1. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to air compressor (8) . The weight of air compressor (8) is approximately 28 kg (61 lb).

  1. Remove the mounting bracket for the air compressor by using the following procedure:
    1. Remove bolts (4) that fasten the mounting bracket to air compressor (8) .

    1. Remove bolts (6) that fasten the mounting bracket to the cylinder block. Remove the mounting bracket for air compressor (8) .

  1. Remove bolts (5) , air compressor (8) , and the gasket from the front housing.

  1. Position air compressor (8) in Tooling (B) and remove bolt (9) and washer (10) . Remove gear (11) .

Installation Procedure

  1. Position air compressor (8) in Tooling (B) . Install gear (11) . Install bolt (9) and washer (10) . Tightened bolt (9) to a torque of 170 ± 15 N·m (125 ± 11 lb ft).

  1. Install Tooling (A) and a suitable lifting device to air compressor (8) . The weight of air compressor (8) is approximately 28 kg (61 lb).

  1. Inspect the condition of the gasket. Replace the gasket, if necessary. Install the gasket between air compressor (8) and the front housing.

  1. Position air compressor (8) in the front housing. Ensure that the drive gear engages correctly with the gear in the front housing.

  1. Apply Tooling (C) to the threads of bolts (5) . Install bolts (5) . Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 100 ± 20 N·m (75 ± 15 lb ft).

  1. Install the mounting bracket for the air compressor by using the following procedure:
    1. Position the bracket for air compressor (8) and install bolts (4) and bolts (6) finger tight.

    NOTICE
A loose compressor bracket can lead to a broken front cover and can cause damage to the front gear train of the engine.

    1. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 60 ± 12 N·m (44 ± 9 lb ft). Tighten bolts (6) to a torque of 60 ± 12 N·m (44 ± 9 lb ft). Remove the suitable lifting device and Tooling (A) .

  1. Connect hose assembly (7) to air compressor (8) . Connect the clip that holds hose assembly (7) to air compressor (8) . Tighten the bolt that holds the clip for hose assembly (7) to a torque of 28 ± 7 N·m (21 ± 5 lb ft).

  1. Connect hose assemblies (1) and (3) to air compressor (8) .

  1. Connect hose (2) to air compressor (8) .

  1. Fill the cooling system with coolant to the correct level. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the correct filling procedure.
