3406E and 3456 Industrial Engines – Flywheel Housing

Remove & Install Flywheel Housing

Start By:

a. remove crankshaft rear seal and wear sleeve

b. remove electric starting motor

c. remove oil pan

Typical Example

1. Install Tool (A), and fasten a hoist. Remove bolts (1) that hold the flywheel housing to the engine.

2. Remove flywheel housing (2) from the dowels in the cylinder block. The weight is 32 kg (70 lb).

NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the flywheel housing.

3. Thoroughly clean the contact surfaces of the cylinder block and flywheel housing. Install a new gasket between the flywheel housing and cylinder block.

4. Install Tool (A) on the flywheel housing as shown. Fasten a hoist, and put flywheel housing (2) in position on the cylinder block.

Earlier Models

5. Tighten the flywheel housing bolts as follows:

a. Tighten bolts (1) through (19) in numerical sequence to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb ft).

b. Tighten bolts (1) through (9) in numerical sequence to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 11 lb ft).

c. Tighten bolts (10) through (19) in numerical sequence to a torque of 55 ± 7 N·m (40 ± 5 lb ft).

Later Models

6. Tighten the flywheel housing bolts as follows:

a. Tighten bolts (1) through (24) in numerical sequence to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb ft).

b. Retorque bolts (1) through (24) in numerical sequence to a torque of 40 ± 7 N·m (30 ± 5 lb ft).

End By:

a. install oil pan

b. install electric starting motor

c. install crankshaft rear seal and wear sleeve
